The movie, The Devil Wears Prada, is about the main character, Andrea, fitting into the fashion world. She started out as a journalist at a workplace she did not like at all, so she quit her job and went to New York City and started a job in a magazine as an “Emily.” In the movie, an “Emily” is an assistant that takes care of all the mean editor-in-chief’s needs. Andrea was the talk of the staff because she had no fashion sense and she wasn’t the same size as the staff. It was only when she got a makeover that she started getting a little respect, but her relationship was slowly suffering for it because her attitude also changed. When Andrea noticed the change in herself, she figured out that the fashion world was not for her, so she walked out on the editor-in-chief and agreed to move with her boyfriend to Boston. Do you think the fashion world forces people to be what they are not? Does it force them to change themselves physically as well as mentally?

I found this video on YouTube and thought it was hilarious. Is this really how people look at fashion? It’s titled “Fashion is a Stranger.” It shows how fashion is stereotyped whether it be through the different poses or just through the environment. He started out with a layout of a few outfits, a cell phone . Then, he described and defined what he thought fashion was all about. He used words such as chic and edge as descriptions. He then named a few cities where fashion is a big deal. For example, he used cities like Moscow, New York City, Tokyo.

What Not to Wear

Channel TLC’s What Not to Wear is a show dedicated to find people on the streets that, according to the hosts, do not have any fashion sense. The hosts, Stacy and Clinton, go out in the city to find outrageous fashion sense. They bring the person back to a department store to get them new clothes, to teach them a few rules about what not to wear, and they get their hair done. Finally, they are sent back on the street to go on with their lives. I think conformity does play a role in today’s society. If the majority is wearing something or doing something, most likely the population goes along with it.

Miley Cyrus Clothing Line Commercial

If you’ve been to Walmart, you probably passed by the clothing section and saw the Miley Cyrus and Max Azria clothing line. I think it is a great idea for celebrities to create their own affordable assembly lines. It’s probably a good idea for other celebrities to make a few collections to put in Wal-Mart because children look up to these celebrities and it teaches them that they do not need to overspend to look like their favorite role models. It also takes pressure off of parents because all they want to do is make their children happy. Do you think more celebrities should do this?

Style Network’s How do I look

Style Network has a show called How do I Look. In this case, former host, Finola Hughes shows the fashion victim some of her options for her brand new wardrobe. The show usually starts out with a friend entering someone they think needs a makeover. The person must give up their rights to their closet and the friend and a couple stylists get to rummage through the closet, throwing out everything they deem unfashionable. The fashion victim is then forced to watch her friend/ family member go shopping for brand new clothes. She has to pick a collection along with the hairstyle within the collection she chooses.

JC Penney vs. Macy’s

Ok, so these pants look relatively similar, right? I came to learn that they are both made of the same materials, rayon/nylon/spandex. Ok so what is wrong with this picture? The pants on the left is from Macys with brand name, xoxo, and the one on the right is from JC Penney with brand name, Tracy Evans. Do you think they are for the same price? If you guessed yes, you are wrong. The one on the left is going for $24.99, while the one on the right is going for $38.98. The reason why one of them is more expensive is because of the brand. Do you think this fair to shoppers? Why is it that some designers get to sell their products for higher prices than others?

I was browsing through the web when I came upon a website showcasing some super expensive designer handbags. I saw the prices and wondered to myself, why would anyone choose to purchase these bags when they can get them way cheaper at Ross? Why would anyone pay for such an expensive bag if not even a portion of it would go towards the common good? The white Fendi designer bag above is being sold for a jaw-dropping $27,700. This is not the only bag that I saw at such an outrageous price. There was another one (Chanel handbag) being sold for $261,000. Now, be honest. Does it depend on one’s financial status for them to buy things at such high prices, is it an obsession, or is it just selfishness?

VMA 2009 Fashion

A lot of people were shocked when they saw Lady Gaga’s many outfits at the VMA awards. First of all, she made an entrance with Kermit the Frog an hour before the show was going to start. Some people thought that she wore all those outfits just to get attention, to promote herself and her music. Some people were wondering about her performance of “Paparazzi,” like where did all that blood come from. Others were wondering about the bird’s nest on her face when she was sitting near Beyonce in the crowd. Personally, I really liked her performance until she started to ascend into the air. What do you have to say about Lady Gaga’s choices of fashion for that night? Do you think her performance was a bit extreme?

Project Runway is a television show on Bravo that gives the opportunity for a designer to showcase his or her work and compete against other designers to win big and possibly make it in the fashion world. To be competitive, the designer must come up with a unique piece to bring forward to the judges and based on what the judges say, a winner is determined. MAD tv is known for making fun of alot of things, including fashion, specifically project runway. In this parody, they make it seem like because a guy in a designer and if he knows alot about fashion as a whole, he must be gay, which I do not think is always true. They also made fun of the judges and kind of portrays fashion as such a haughty atmosphere, in such a way that sometimes people ask themselves ”what do they know about fashion?”

In this youtube video, wouldyou.direct.gov.uk shows an extreme fashion show taken to another level, to express a strong statement about drinking. At first, you would think the fashion show was just another normal one. Then it went downhill when the first model urinated on the catwalk. The second model vomited, and the next model was really aggressive towards the last model. The core message is for people not to drink. If one does not drink responsibly, it does show. Do you think this video was exaggerated a bit? Is it ok for younger children to see this video? Was it necessary for them to portray models in that manner to send out such a message?
